A peer-reviewed study out of Yale University found that teaching social and emotional learning, things like managing feelings, handling anxiety, and building healthy relationships, doesn’t just help kids feel better - it helps them learn better, too.
After reviewing 40 studies, researchers found that students who participated in SEL programs saw:
- ELA (reading & writing) scores rise by over 6 percentile points
- Math scores increase by about 4 points
- Overall academic performance improve by nearly a full letter grade
As researcher Dr. Chris Cipriano puts it, “these new results back up something brain scientists have long known, that cognition and emotion are inextricably tied together and helping kids with the latter can make the former a whole lot easier.”
At Windhorse, our classes are strategically designed to provide experiential opportunities for students to observe and learn social and emotional skills. Through partnership with horses, they are able to begin developing skillsets that not only support their everyday lives, but are proven to help them in their academic worlds.
